Excelsior, or wood wool, is Aspen wood shavings used for fruit fly cultures to give the flies an abundance of surface area to stand on. Excelsior allows for more ventilation than coffee filters, but can be messier. 1 gallon provides enough excelsior for 10+ cultures.
