In dart frog habitats there can be an over accumulation of water and this water needs to go somewhere, so Hydroton or LECA (Light Expanded Clay Aggregate) acts as a drainage layer in a naturalistic vivarium. All the excess water drains to the bottom of the enclosure preventing it from fully saturating the soil substrate, avoiding anaerobic conditions. Hydroton has great water storing properties as well as balanced capillary action which helps to accelerate plant growth. Additionally, it provides extra surface area for microfauna and beneficial bacteria to thrive.
