About FrogFever

What's up with the name Frog-Fever?

Well, the name kind of chose itself... One day I was showing my friend our frog room and he said, "Man, it looks like you caught the frog-fever!" ..there was no denying that- he was right ...and it's been our name ever since.

How did we manage to end up with so many frogs!?

Maybe you can tell... We are very passionate about our frogs and value every single one of them. Whether it be a mere tadpole or an adult frog, keeping all of those little hearts beating day in and day out is not only our duty, but is our very livelihood! There is much work that goes into managing such a large collection, and we feel its something we've been preparing for since we were little kids.

For as long as I can remember I've been fascinated with amphibians. There are old home videos of me as a child leaning over a small pond watching the tadpoles bob up and down in the calm, sun-lit water. In that moment I was in my own little world... as if there was nothing else to be doing and no where else to be... and there wasn't. It was just the tadpoles and me. I was content. I've always considered the metamorphosis from an egg, into a tadpole, and then into a fully-formed frog to be one of the greatest, most enduring transformations on planet Earth. It was this type of uncomprehendable event that has captivated me throughout the years. As I grew older those youthful years of walking along logs and wading through swamps eventually faded away into the background... at least for a while.

Fast forward to December 2010... It had been more than a decade since I'd kept any amphibians as pets, but one gloomy winter day I placed an order for a pair of Red Eyed tree frogs for my bedroom. These frogs weren't just any average frog though, these were the "Save-The-Rainforest" campaign's poster child! When they arrived and I saw them for the first time I knew immediately that my fascination with frogs had been rejuvenated. I designed and built a rainforest-style vivarium for them that had a cork bark/sphagnum moss background and was fully planted with real, lush, tropical foliage. The frogs vivid flashes of yellow, blue, and green contrasted nicely against their tropical habitat and was a welcoming change of scenery from the ten shades of grey that were becoming all too familiar that time of year.

The sheer beauty and splendor of this one species quickly led to another... The Tiger-Legged Monkey Frog, another spectacular frog species, became the second species that was to become part of the collection. Naturally, this species of course led to more, until those first few vivariums filled up the entire rack they were sitting on. More racks were added and over time  the collection expanded to the point of requiring an entire room devoted solely to frogs! It took a matter of months for that frog room to become filled to maximum capacity, so moved onto a bigger room, and then finally into the huge room that you see in the photos.

No one could have predicted the rate at which this small collection would explode into such a large scale hobby, but the passion we harbor is tremendous and the collection still grows. The frog room holds numerous species of dart frogs and monkey frogs, but geckos and monitors call this their home as well. Lately our focus has moved more towards the rare and unique frog species, and we wouldn't have it any other way!
